Sorry for the occasional frat humor that I resort to in these entries, but here is yet another poem I remember that made me laugh as a child (uh, I hate to admit this, but I still laugh now).  Here goes:

Beans, beans…they’re good for your heart,,,

The more you eat them, the more you fart.

For any Mel Brook’s movie fans out there, you are sure to remember the campfire scene in the movie, Blazing Saddles.  Check this out on the link at the end of this entry.

Okay, away from the GI effects of beans as well as the bathroom humor and let’s get serious and discuss the health effects of eating beans.  Here are some health benefits to consuming beans:

  • High source of fiber: about 19 grams of fiber per cup
  • High in protein: about 16.5 grams per cup
  • High in antioxidants: this can prevent cellular damage
  • Possibly helps with cancer prevention: some studies have shown that consuming beans regularly cuts the risk of colorectal cancer
  • High in folate: this helps the production of red blood cells and supports the neuro system
  • Supports heart health: studies have shown an improved LDL/HDL cholesterol levels as well as reduced risk in developing heart disease
  • Improved glucose control and reduces the risk of developing diabetes
  • Improves gut health: Studies show that the consumption of beans may increase the number of “beneficial” bacteria in the gut

Concerning weight control, consuming proteins such as eggs, poultry, fish and even red meat are more beneficial to help shed the weight than relying on beans as the major protein intake  However, a modest amount of bean consumption can help other health issues

And as promised, here is one of the most memorable scenes from the movie comedy, Blazing Saddles (you may never eat beans again!).
