The nightmare medical scenario that occurs with contracting the Covid-19 virus is a pneumonia developing, turning into ARDS (Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome). The development of ARDS is a life-threatening event that may require ventilator usage with potential death as an outcome in about 40% of the ARDS cases that develop.

There is a natural anti-oxidant produced by humans called extracellular superoxide dismutase (EcSOD) and this chemical appears to offer protection from developing ARDS.  Studies performed at the University of Virginia suggest that regular exercise (about 30 minutes a day) ramps up production of EcSOD.

Studies are showing that between 20-42% of hospitalized patients wit Covid-19 will develop ARDS.  Once again, there are many other risk factors that low EcSOD levels that will influence the development of ARDS including underlying lung disease, heart disease, hypertension, diabetes and of course, obesity.

Exercise may also provide a stress-relief component as well as the wonderful overall physical health impact.  So, to all of our patients:  PLEASE ensure you are getting at least 30 minutes a day of some sort of aerobic exercise.  AND…getting up from the couch to get the remote control to change the TV from Netflix to Amazon does not count!

Reminder:  Join me and the SP Team on Wednesday, April 22 at 8:00 PM for a LIVE event…Guaranteed to be better than a Season 3 episode rerun of Sex In The City! (But maybe not as good as a Season 4 episode rerun of The Sopranos)
