For you Vegans or Vegetarians out there, please read no further.  The following post will hold no interest for you.  However, for you Carnivores, please go on.

Before we begin, writing this post brings thoughts to me of my past college days.  I went to SUNY Binghamton in upstate New York and there was a restaurant across from the campus called Emersons.  On Monday and Tuesday nights the restaurant featured an “All You Can Eat Steak and All You Can Drink Beer” special.  Baaaad idea to place this within walking distance from a bunch of college age guys when the legal drinking age in New York was 18 at that time.  Many a times my friends and I would walk to Emersons and each devour many steaks and pitches of beer.  Ahhh…the old days!  Okay, back to the script:

During a long-term weight control journey we recommend lots of protein and vegetables intake while minimizing carbohydrates, fruits and fats.  Focusing on proteins, the “non-red meat” proteins such as fish and chicken are probably a healthier choice of protein than a Five Guys burger off the bun.  Many meat-eating people do enjoy steak, albeit not every day.  Different cuts of steak will contain varying amounts of fat.  Here is a list of the different types of steaks and where they sit on the “lean” scale:

  • No.1 Leanest Steak Cuts: Top Round Roast
  • 2nd Leanest Steak Cuts: Bottom Round Roast
  • 3rd Leanest Steak Cuts: Top Sirloin Steak
  • 4th Leanest Steak Cuts: Shank
  • 5th Leanest Steak Cuts: Filet Mignon
  • 6th Leanest Steak Cuts: Flank Steak
  • 7th Leanest Steak Cuts: Bavette Steak
  • 8th Leanest Steak Cuts: Tri-Tip

This list came as a surprise for me as I always thought that my favorite steak, Filet Mignon, was the leanest of all steaks as you really do not see very much fat on that type of steak.

Still, it is best to incorporate more poultry and fish as sources of protein but most certainly, red meat can be used very successfully for weight control.  If you are a steak lover, try to use the leaner of the steak cuts as your “go to” steak treat.

But if cheeseburgers are your “go to” meat as opposed to steak, here is Jimmy Buffett singing about your favorite meat.
